While the focus of the program is on the crafts of composition: Counterpoint, Keyboard Harmony, Analysis, Musicianship and Chorale, private instruction in composition is offered to work on problems and concerns unique to each student.

Students receive three private composition lessons during the program with their major teacher and participate in group lectures and masterclasses. In 2008, Sofia Gubaidulina will be giving discussions and mentoring composers.
